Azerbaijan plans to increase electricity generation from alternative energy sources to 6–8 gigawatts (GW) by 2032. According to the Operational Information Center (OMM), President Ilham Aliyev made the statement during the 12th Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the Green Energy Advisory Council.
Aliyev said Azerbaijan expects to generate 6–8 GW of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2032. “This is a very large potential. Therefore, we need to export it. At the same time, we must use this capacity to meet domestic demand, as natural gas currently used for electricity generation needs to be gradually replaced,” he noted.
The president also emphasized the need to support the country’s growing economy and industry, including plans related to the communications sector, artificial intelligence and data centers. These ambitious plans form part of Azerbaijan’s long-term strategy to become a regional green energy hub.
The transition to renewable energy will not only reduce carbon emissions but will also allow Azerbaijan to replace natural gas used in domestic thermal power plants, thereby increasing the volume of gas available for export. In recent years, Azerbaijan has actively attracted foreign investment in solar and wind energy projects while strengthening its role as a key partner in ensuring Europe’s energy security.
