Another major investment project aimed at reducing Azerbaijan’s dependence on pharmaceutical imports has been implemented. The country’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturing plant, built by a Turkish company in the Pirallahi Industrial Park near Baku, was officially inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

The plant has the capacity to produce 60 million packages of medicines per year, equivalent to approximately 2.5 billion tablets and capsules. In addition to painkillers and antibiotics, the facility is planned to manufacture medicines used in cardiology, neurology, urology, diabetology and gastroenterology. The plant occupies an area of 5.2 hectares and is expected to provide employment for 178 people.

The medicines produced at the facility are planned to be exported not only to Azerbaijan but also to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and other countries. Educational infrastructure for Karabakh University and Azerbaijan Medical University has also been established on the plant’s premises.

“We aim to produce more than 500 medicines within five years”

Abidin Gülmüş, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Turkish pharmaceutical company, said that the plant would primarily focus on producing essential medicines for which there is high demand in Azerbaijan.

Gülmüş noted that their initial goal is to start producing 50 different medicines in 2027. “We are the only plant in Azerbaijan capable of carrying out the entire production process, from raw materials to finished products. We have completed the development of formulas for new medicines and aim to produce more than 500 medicines within five years,” he said.
