A number of documents aimed at expanding economic and strategic cooperation between Türkiye and Turkmenistan were signed following a meeting in Ashgabat between Türkiye’s Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Nökerguly Atagulyyev.
The parties first held bilateral and expanded-format talks, after which the 9th Session of the Turkmenistan–Türkiye Intergovernmental Economic Commission (IEC) was convened under their co-chairmanship. At the end of the meeting, the Protocol of the 9th Session of the IEC on Economic Cooperation and a Joint Action Plan consisting of 71 items were signed.
Speaking at the session, Cevdet Yılmaz described Türkiye and Turkmenistan as close strategic partners united by a common history, culture, and vision for the future. According to Yılmaz, bilateral trade volume reached $2.2 billion in 2025. The two countries aim to increase this figure to $5 billion in the near future.
He also emphasized the importance of updating the Agreement on the Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments, noting that Turkish construction companies have implemented 1,101 projects in Turkmenistan with a total value of $56 billion.
Highlighting the growing importance of the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor amid changes in global trade and supply chains, Yılmaz stated: “The Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor is no longer merely an alternative; it has become a secure and essential route for global trade. Türkiye and Turkmenistan stand at the heart of this strategic corridor.”
He added that the Middle Corridor, developed through joint efforts by the two countries, would become one of the key transport and energy arteries of Eurasia. Addressing energy cooperation, Yılmaz noted that Turkmenistan's role in global energy markets continues to strengthen and expressed readiness to expand cooperation in the exploration, production, and export of hydrocarbon resources. According to him, the Turkish side is interested in joint projects aimed at developing new fields and transporting Turkmen natural gas via the Caspian Sea to Türkiye and Europe.
Yılmaz also stressed the importance of signing an agreement on cooperation in education in the near future, noting that a memorandum of understanding enabling the Türkiye Maarif Foundation to open schools in Turkmenistan would further strengthen ties between the peoples of the two countries. At the conclusion of the meeting, Yılmaz expressed confidence that the signed protocol and the 71-point action plan would provide fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation and generate mutually beneficial results.
