Azerbaijan and Türkiye are expanding their cooperation in the energy sector beyond oil and natural gas, including efforts to further integrate the electricity systems of the two countries. Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, made the statement at the 5th Azerbaijan-Türkiye Energy Forum.
According to Bayraktar, relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan go beyond neighborhood ties and commercial partnership. Alparslan Bayraktar stated: “Our ties are based on strong brotherhood rooted deeply in history, mutual trust and shared achievements. We see this forum not merely as a platform that brings together the energy sectors of the two countries, but as a strategic platform for shaping our common future based on the principle of ‘one nation, two states.’”
Bayraktar noted that energy cooperation between the two countries covers not only oil and natural gas, but also mining, renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, electricity markets, as well as electricity transmission and distribution systems.
According to the minister, the global energy sector is undergoing major transformations, with energy systems increasingly shifting toward electricity. “This is not only about generating energy. The most important issue is delivering the energy produced to consumers safely, reliably, quickly and efficiently,” he said.
He noted that strong and interconnected electricity systems strengthen energy security, facilitate the integration of renewable and green energy sources, and create new opportunities for electricity trade between countries. Bayraktar added that Türkiye views interconnectors not merely as technical lines linking two energy systems, but as a strategic instrument that contributes to the further integration of the countries’ energy systems.
