Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have positively assessed Türkiye’s initiative to establish TÜRKPOL, a police organization of the Turkic states. Türkiye’s Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi made the statement to journalists following the third meeting of the interior ministers of the member states of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), held in Astana.

According to Çiftçi, the establishment of TÜRKPOL could contribute to strengthening cooperation among the Turkic states in the fight against international crime. The meeting also addressed ways to facilitate mutual travel for citizens of the OTS member states. In this regard, the possibility of establishing unified passport control points for citizens of Turkic states at airports and introducing a mechanism similar to the system used in European Union countries was discussed.

Another issue on the agenda was enabling citizens of the Turkic states to travel between countries using their national identity cards. According to Mustafa Çiftçi, such a mechanism is currently in place between Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as well as between Türkiye and Azerbaijan. Türkiye considers it appropriate to extend this practice to other Turkic states as well.

The minister also announced that a summit of the leaders of the OTS member states will be held in Ankara next month. He noted that the Astana meeting was an important stage in preparations for the upcoming high-level discussions to be held under the chairmanship of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
