The Zangezur Corridor, which connects Central Asia, the Caspian region, Azerbaijan, and Armenia to Turkey, is emerging as an important part of the Middle Corridor. In this context, the foundation of the Kars–Iğdır–Aralık–Dilucu railway line was laid in August.

Experts note that the corridor is significant not only for trade but also for energy security. It could serve as a strategic route for delivering alternative oil, gas, and electricity to Europe.

According to Prof. Dr. Oktay Tanrısever, the corridor will provide the shortest route for transporting Caspian energy resources to Turkey and Europe, though addressing security concerns will take time. He added that if more oil and gas reach Turkey via Zangezur, it could support the country’s goal of becoming a key regional energy hub.

Prof. Dr. Levent Aydın stated that Zangezur could complement existing energy pipelines such as TANAP, TurkStream, and BTC that already pass through Turkey. He emphasized that in the future, the corridor could also become a strategic infrastructure route for gas and oil pipelines, electricity transmission lines, and digital communications.

Experts underline that the EU and the US support the project as an energy route independent of Russia, while China views it as a new logistical front within its “Belt and Road Initiative.”
