The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan reflects on a year marked by key milestones and notable advancements in renewable energy (RES). The successful execution of projects and strategic partnerships has bolstered Kazakhstan's role on the global energy stage, according to the Ministry's press release.
In 2024, Kazakhstan launched three new RES facilities with a combined capacity of 34.75 MW, supported by investments totaling 13.7 billion tenge. By year’s end, five additional facilities with a combined capacity of 128.4 MW are expected to come online, further enhancing the nation’s energy portfolio.
Currently, the country operates 148 RES facilities with an aggregate installed capacity of 2,903.7 MW. These facilities are pivotal in reducing Kazakhstan’s carbon footprint while ensuring clean, sustainable energy for the nation’s grid.
The renewable energy sector has also significantly contributed to the economy and job creation, with the number of RES-related jobs reaching 1,809 in 2024. This underscores the dual role of renewable energy in driving both environmental progress and socio-economic development across Kazakhstan’s regions.
A standout achievement of the year was the signing of an investment agreement with Masdar to construct a 1 GW wind farm in the Zhambyl region. This project, incorporating advanced energy storage systems, marks a critical step toward enhancing the reliability and stability of Kazakhstan’s energy network.
Another landmark was the intergovernmental agreement with China to build RES facilities with a total installed capacity of 1.8 GW. This collaboration underscores Kazakhstan’s commitment to fostering international partnerships, attracting investments, and integrating cutting-edge technologies.
In a move to empower individuals and small-scale initiatives, Kazakhstan enacted a new law in 2024 to promote the adoption of RES technologies at the household level. The legislation simplifies the process of installing solar panels and other energy-efficient systems, paving the way for widespread adoption of green energy solutions.
Kazakhstan continues to lead the renewable energy transition in Central Asia. In 2024, the nation not only expanded its RES capacity but also strengthened its energy infrastructure, advancing toward a sustainable economy and cleaner energy future.
