Kazakh Transport Minister Marat Karabayev said that Turkish companies ASFAT and YDA Group are planning to build a shipyard near the Kuryk Port on the Caspian Sea.
Karabayev said, “Another problem is the lack of ships. Currently, only Azerbaijani ferries operate between Kuryk and Alyat. We need at least seven ships. In order to build them, ASFAT and YDA are planning to build a shipyard near the Kuryk Port.”
Kazakh Transport Ministry had previously considered building a shipyard on the Caspian Sea coast to support the inland fleet. While studies are ongoing to determine whether the project planned to build military ships and boats will be evaluated separately or combined with this new project, the ministry announced in February 2024 that the country needs to build ten new ships, including three tankers, three bulk carriers and four ferries.
According to the Minister, over the next three years it is planned to increase the container handling capacity of the port of Aktau from 140 to 550 thousand containers.
“For this purpose, the construction of a container hub has begun jointly with the Chinese company Lianyungang Port”. In addition, with such companies as German “Renus”, American Wandernet and French CMA CGM, the creation of an additional container terminal with a capacity of 300 thousand containers is being worked out. Also in the port of Kuryk a multifunctional terminal “Sarzha” is under construction,” the Minister added.
In addition, a project of a terminal for transportation of green hydrogen, which is planned to be produced in the region, is being developed in Mangistau region.
