Uzbekistan is considering the possibility of basing its future cargo fleet in the seaports of Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan in order to ensure stable transportation of export-import cargo and reduce delays along transit routes.
According to reports, the country has begun developing mechanisms for leasing and purchasing cargo ferries to operate in the Caspian Sea. Acting Deputy Minister of Investments, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan Shokhrukh Gulamov announced the initiative, as reported by “Upl.uz”.
According to Gulamov, creating a national fleet will become a new direction for Uzbekistan’s logistics sector. Since the construction and commissioning of vessels may take at least five years, leasing ships is currently being considered as a faster solution.
It should be noted that in July 2025, the transport authorities of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan signed a cooperation protocol aimed at developing collaboration in the Caspian region. In August of the same year, the Uzbek side also signed a memorandum of cooperation with Turkmenistan in the field of shipbuilding.
