Uzbekistan is implementing the Kungrad Wind Power Project, with a capacity of 1.5 GW and a total estimated cost of approximately $3.07 billion. The project envisages the construction of three wind power plants, an energy storage system, and high-voltage power transmission lines to transmit the electricity generated to Uzbekistan’s power grid. The information was reported by the “inbusiness.kz” news service.
According to the publication, approximately 1,450 kilometres of high-voltage power transmission lines are planned to be constructed to transmit the electricity generated to the national power grid. The project is being implemented by Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power.
According to the investor, the Kungrad complex will comprise three wind power plants with a combined capacity of 1,500 MW, as well as an energy storage system with a capacity of 300 MW.
The electricity generated will be purchased by the National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan under a 25-year agreement. According to plans previously announced by ACWA Power, all of the wind power plants are expected to become operational in 2027.
Renewable energy generation is increasing
Uzbekistan is actively expanding its renewable energy capacity in response to growing electricity demand. According to data from the country’s Ministry of Energy, power plants generated 86.7 billion kWh of electricity in 2025, compared with 81.5 billion kWh in 2024.
Electricity generation from solar and wind power plants reached 10.5 billion kWh, increasing 2.1-fold over the year. Including hydropower, electricity generated from renewable sources reached 16.8 billion kWh, an increase of 29% compared with 2024. According to the Ministry of Energy, the development of renewable energy helped save 3.2 billion cubic metres of natural gas.
At the same time, natural gas continues to play an important role in Uzbekistan’s energy system. The country produced 44.6 billion cubic metres of natural gas in 2025.
