Uzbekistan is considering the possibility of purchasing ships from Turkmenistan to transport goods across the Caspian Sea.

Uzbekistan’s Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov, told the “Uzbekistan 24” TV channel that discussions are already underway regarding the purchase of ships from Turkmenistan’s shipbuilding plant, gazeta.uz reported.

According to Ilkhom Makhkamov, Uzbekistan’s own ferries will make it possible to speed up the transportation of cargo across the Caspian and reduce transport congestion that currently lasts 30–40 days. The minister also shared information about agreements with his Turkmen counterparts in the field of shipbuilding. He and Turkmenistan’s Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Memmethan Chakiyev, signed a memorandum of understanding on developing cooperation in ship construction.

Ilkhom Makhkamov stated: “We agreed to conduct an analysis and will consider the issue of purchasing ships. All technical issues need to be resolved, but this document allows us to freely work out technical and economic matters.”

It should be noted that, following the results of the trilateral summit between Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan, a number of documents on transport and logistics cooperation, including memorandums of understanding, were signed.
